AirPrint Compatible Printers | And How To Use What You Already Have

If you are like me, you are wondering just what printers currently support AirPrint.  As it turns out there are quite a few but keep in mind that because the feature is so new, there is only a few available and these are all by one vendor, HP.  A rumored email from Steve Jobs says that there are more coming but here are the current supported list of Airprint printers plus a way you can actually use what you already have.

AirPrint Compatible Printers

HP currently is the only manufacturer to have printers ready for AirPrint. But not all of their printers support it.  Here is a list of their printers which do support Airprint and ones which will require upgrades.

Fully Compatible With AirPrint

Basically, any of the HP printers which are the “E” series will be compatible with AirPrint and not need an upgrade or additional software.

Airprint Compatible Printers That May Need A Firmware Upgrade

These printers all need a firmware upgrade to be fully compatible with AirPrint and the links above will provide that information.

How To Use The Printer You Already Have

You might already have a printer and you do not want to go out and buy one just for the sake of AirPrint compatibility. Fair enough.  Here is a way you can use your own printer and still get this to work.

  1. Make sure your current printer is connected to your Mac (assuming you have one)
  2. Enable Printer Sharing on your Mac (located in the settings preferences)
  3. Get either Printopia or FingerPrint and use them for shared printer support

To learn more about Printopia and FignerPrint here is our article on iPad Shared Printer Support that will show you what you need

You should now be able to print to a non-airprint compatible printer and be up and running in no time. And here is our guide on how to use AirPrint.

Thanks–your Airprint suggestions worked using my old printer (I tested your ideas using the printopia demo, which I plan to buy, since it works).

  3. David says:

I am so disappointed with AirPrint. I have a wireless HP photosmart C6380, and was expecting to be able to supply AirPrint with an IP address so that it could print. I don’t have the printer connected to any PC ( it’s wireless after all) and I don’t leave a PC turned on all the time (that’s why I bought the IPad) so I can’t share the printer.

Hey David! Sorry to hear that. It makes no sense to me that hp did not enable this on all their wireless printers. However, they could do it so dont give up yet. Do you have an airport extreme?

Is there an Epson wireless printer compatible with the Ipad2?
