iPad Troubleshooting Guide | What You Need To Know

The iPad is a pretty robust and simple device.  There are, however, times when it needs a bit of troubleshooting to get it going again.  Here are some iPad Troubleshooting tips to get you going when you get stuck…

One of the great things about the iPad is that there are no moving parts. It is running one of the best Operating Systems out there, and it is easy to use.  However, it still has it’s issues from time to time and there are some basic iPad troubleshooting steps you can take to get unstuck!   We will add to this post frequently as new things arise so stop back by if you are looking for troubleshooting help.

Here Are Some Basic iPad Troubleshooting Steps for The Following Issues

iPad TroubleshootingiPad Camera Connection Kit Troubleshooting

  • Make sure all the adapters are firmly seated in and tight
  • Make sure if you have a cover or case it is not impeding the adapter from plugging all the way in
  • Make sure the camera is fully charged when using the USB method

The iPad Won’t Turn On, or the Display won’t respond

  • Turn it off and then turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of the iPad for a few seconds, until the red slider appears. Slide it and then press the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears
  • Reset the iPad.  Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

Troubleshooting iPad and iTunes Sync Issues

  • Disconnect other USB devices from your computer and connect iPad to a different USB 2.0 port (not the one on your keyboard)
  • Turn it off and then turn it on again.  Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of the iPad for a few seconds, until the red slider appears. Slide it and then press the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears
  • Restart your computer. Reconnect the iPad.
  • Download and install (or reinstall) the latest version of iTunes.

Troubleshooting iPad Multi-Touch display

  • Clean the iPad screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth
  • Do not wear gloves using the Multi-Touch display.  Do not the touchscreen with wet hands or immediately after applying hand lotion. Moisture affects touchscreen behavior in the same manner as it affects a trackpad
  • Remove any screen protector
  • Turn it off and then turn it on again.  Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of the iPad for a few seconds, until the red slider appears. Slide it and then press the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears

The iPad Won’t Restore

  • On the iPad, go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset.  This will restore your iPad to factory settings.  You can now set it up as a new device (within iTunes)

We will be adding to this troubleshooting list as new issues and solutions arise. If you have any iPad issues you want to add, let us know in the comments.

If all else fails with troubleshooting your iPad, just remember to call the Apple Store or go online and make an appointment with the Genius Bar.  Also, you can go to the Apple Support forums for the iPad and get some great advice as well.

my iPad shows only the apple and a white line. I thought it was sync but now it wont’ turn off. what do I do?

      1. Shane says:

        Hey Carlos.

What happens if you hold the home button and the on/off switch for 15 seconds?? Does it reboot?

        1. Carlos says:

          Shane,
I did hold it for about 30 seconds, but nothing happened. I think I am going to let it die and recharge again. It could be, perhaps, that I disconnected it while it was still sync and somehow it froze! :(

          1. Shane says:

Wow. I have not seen this. What about a restore?

            1. Carlos says:

Let me try that. I sure hope it works! Thanks for your tech support. :)

  4. Donna says:

My ipad doesn’t recognize my comcast wifi password – it says incorrect password and I know it’s correct!

    1. Shane says:

      Hi Donna –
One thing I have done when this happened is I changed my comcast wifi password to something else, then change it on the iPad as well. Or…you could always turn wifi off and then back on again…or…hold down the home button and the on/off switch then when the red slider appears just keep holding it and it will reboot….

  5. Doris says:

My screen won’t shift from portrait to landscape

    1. Shane says:

      Hi Doris,
Did you somehow press the “screen rotation lock”? Are you using iOS 4.2? If so, you double-click the Home button and then look at the icons on the bottom that pop up….scroll them all the way to the right and you will see a little gray one with an arrow in it..that’s the screen lock which controls rotation.

  6. Olga says:

When I add new contact and I am done entering all information, I touch the Done icon and nothing happens. What is wrong?

  7. randy says:

My ipad is stuck in an oversized position. I need to shrink my screen so that I may see everything on the page. Any suggestions?

    1. Shane says:

      Hi Randy –

Try a reset and it may get it back to normal. Just hold down the on/of button and the home button at the same time for about 15 seconds and it will completely reset and come back on…this is kind of like doing a reboot!

  8. Lynne says:

Dear Shane, I am back again. You suggested I should now delete the email set up I have, and re set it up. The trouble is Shane, I don’t know how to do that. So I have not deleted anything yet. I noticed I have to put a password in to re set it, and I do not know what it is / was! Can you help me any more please? Many thanks,
    Lynne

    1. Shane says:

Hi Lynn. The email account can be deleted by going into settings and then tapping on “mail accounts” and then from there you will see your accounts and you can delete them. This may help. Anytime it asks you for a password, it’s usually the same password you use to sign into iTunes with. Is that helpful?

  9. Cristina says:

    Hi!

My iPad suddenly “blacked out!” I tried turning it on and off but nothing appeared. Can iPad experience “crashing”, like other hard drives?

    Thanksmuch for your help.

    Cristina

    1. Shane says:

      Hi Cristina.
It has been known to crash but very rare. There is no hard drive so that’s good. It’s only flash storage.

Hold down the home button and the on/off button for 15 seconds until you see the silver apple. It should reboot and hopefully fix the screen

      1. mary says:

  11. Mike says:

I have a number of downloaded games that recently quit working on my iPad. The games are Infinity Blade, Dead Space, Zombie Trailer Park, Rage and recently downloaded The price is right. Pretty much every game has a cutoff point either early in the game or in the intro. This is my first apple product and I loved it until this hiccup.

    1. shane says:

      Hi there,
If they freeze like that then it might be that your internet is losing it’s connection when they are downloading but what you can try is either holding down on it and waiting for the icon to shake and then pressing the “minus” sign to delete it or press it once and it should continue to download.
