Sometimes a game comes along that is unlike anything you have seen before. Speedx 3D for Android is a total assault on the senses, making great use of your smartphone’s accelerometer to create a game that is part racing sim, part mind altering drug.
It is claimed to be the best Android games on the Android Market that supports 3D glasses, but this is more gimmick than reality. The fact of the matter is there is a mode you can use, so that the game is compatible with the red-green 3D glasses of old, so anyone expecting to use a pair of their polarised lenses as part of the gaming experience will be bitterly disappointed. This aside, the game plays perfectly well in 2D and this complements its torn-like visuals. It is with the visuals in fact where the game is clever. Instead of winding round the 3D track in a vehicle you find yourself first-person going around a track that flits from tunnels to blackouts, to straight plains of nothingness. Using your phone’s motion control, you have to guide yourself around the seemingly endless track picking up free upgrades along the way and trying not to face-plant into the many obstacles you’ll encounter.
It’s a simple, great idea that uses trippy visuals and music to its advantage. At first it looks as if the obstacles come from random places, but there are numerous hints along the way – including different colour trails warning you when you are close to hitting something.
The gameplay is compulsive and the graphics are among the smoothest we have seen. There was no lag any time we played, which just adds to the experience.
For a game that’s exclusively for Android, Speedx 3D is a great find. There are also two versions of it on the Android Market. There’s the paid-for and then there’s a free one where you have to purchase the upgrades on offer rather than getting them for free.
This is a good way to entice anyone with an Android smartphone into downloading this game – which you should all do now. This app is one of the best Android games.
