Chambers Dictionary for iPad : has been around sound 1872 when it was first published and us a favorite of crossword fans and scrabble players. In fact it was at one time the official scrabble dictionary. The app version includes an intelligent word entry system which suggests words as you type them in. this can save some time as you don’t have to enter the whole word, similar to they way Google predicts your searches. It’s also clever enough to recognize if you’ve spelt the word incorrectly and also to suggest correct words in the case of words that are commonly misused or mis-spelt. Tis also includes words that sound like other words and are often confused as a result.
Searches can be filtered by nouns, adjectives, adverbs and so on. Tenses are also taken into account, as are derived forms, all of which means you should have absolutely no trouble getting to the exact word you need. In addition you can bookmark words, the app records recent searches and you can get it to select random words for you if that’s the kind of thing that floats your boat.
This is a very comprehensive and easily navigable dictionary app that seems to have the edge on the competition when it comes to some of the bang up to date terminology. There are no frills with the presentation but that’s not what you want with an app of this type. Along with its sister app the Chambers Thesaurus this will prove a valuable tool for anyone who works with words for a living. Plus you’ll never be cheated at scrabble ever again! Both reasons make it essential!
