Convert DVD To iPad – How To [Re Post]

Convert DVD to iPad is one of the questions I get quite frequently.  I made this video to show you the process I use for getting my movies onto the iPad.  It does require some software (which works on both Windows and Mac) and it takes a little time for the DVD movies to prepare but it is a process that is simple and easy.

Convert DVD To iPad

In case you cannot see or hear the video, here are the basic steps for convert DVD to iPad:

  1. Download and install Handbrake + the VLC plugin (automatic)
  2. Insert a DVD movie into your computer
  3. Open Handbrake and press the “source” button
  4. Press the “Presets” button and select “Apple – Universal”
  5. Press “Start”

It will take about an hour for the movie to finish.  Your mileage may vary but this is the time it takes on my own system with a standard 1.5 hour long movie.

Once it is done, drag-and-drop the movie file onto iTunes and then Sync your iPad.

Convert DVD To iPad. Mike over at Brisk Studios was kind enough to let me know that there is also some nice software you can purchase for putting DVD’s on your iPad.  It’s called DVD Remaster by Metakine and can be found here.

EASY QUESTION. “HOW” DO YOU DRAG AND DROP YOUR HANDBRAKE MOVIE TO ITUNES AND WHERE ON ITUNES DOES IT SAY “SYNC”. YEP. I’M NEW TO IPAD2.

    • Shane says:

Hi Wayne. Thanks for the question. In iTunes you will see where it says “videos” or “movies”. Just click that and then you will see an area no movies or videos…just drop the movie you made with handbreak in that area.

Next….plug your iPad into iTunes and click the little iPad icon. Three will be a tab for syncing videos. Make sure the box is checked to sync your videos and then click Apply down in the lower right hand corner of iTunes. Now it syncs!!!

My movie will not drag and drop into iTunes. I have also tried to do it via the Menu of File, Add File to Library, but it doesn’t load it. Any ideas? I am using HandBrake 0.9.5 for Windows, but did not see any additional VLC plugin when I downloaded Handbrake. The movie that HandBrake copied is a .m4v and is 9.62GB in size (rather large).

Handbrake is now only available in 64 bit version
    I also have Lion
    Any suggestions?

    • Deb doyle says:

I just got this working. Use Vlc first and save it to hard drive
Then process that output file with handbrake.
      It works great now.

Now can someone tell me how to view my movies just like itune purchased ones on apple tv?

  7. Kenny says:

    Hi Shane,

I have a 64bit windows 7 and for some reason after I followed your directions to the T twice with Handbrake, the movies come out all pixelated and low quality. I don’t get what I’m doing wrong. Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Ken

  8. Ben says:

Am considering purchasing an Ipad and am concerned that there is no way to download CD music unless bought through Apple. Is there any way to transfer music files from my Hewlet Packard (W 7) ? Would appreciate an answer.
