Supr 8TM | Essential iPad Apps

From the visionary creator of lost and the director of Star Trek comes a camera app?! Before the seminal launch of the App Store, a mobile promotional tool for a potential big screen summer blockbuster would have been the expected recovered sprites and “will that do” gameplay of the movie to game template. THANKFULLY those days have gone and now in an area of brand marketing that was once as predictable as the popcorn shilling fodder that inspired it developers are finding new and dare we say original concepts to get you into the movie theatre on a Friday night.

Take this app which is rather fittingly is a fully usable camera app that allows you to directly add that vintage home movie (Supr 8 camera style) feel to your captured HD video footage as you record it. Inspired by the home movie making of yesteryear that inspired the title of JJ Abram’s potentially excellent ode to 1980’s family films, Super 8, which in turn is about a bunch of kids making a monster home movie only for a real monster to show up!

Admittedly there is a lot of promotion of the film here, trailers and video footage etc but when you consider the array of camera effects, a bizarre hidden footage game which requires you to examine film frames one by one, the retro charm covered presentation – featuring a virtual movie projector and screen – and the fact this is completely free, the hard sell is easy to forgive and unlike the fast majority of promotional apps, this one will be used long after the movie has left your memory.
