XBMC On Jailbroken iPad iOS 4.2

I was first expecting a basic media player with support for a couple extra codecs. I was blown away when I started to explore this full client with support for all the codecs I’ve ever used (yes it will play an mkv file, I was shocked too).

Nothing seems to be all that different from previous versions and that’s not only good but amazing to achieve such parallelism across devices. The package comes in at a hefty 37.8 MB install but is it ever worth it, nowhere else will you get this generous and intuitive interface and selection of codecs. I highly recommend this XBMC app. Just open Cydia and install it now, you’ll be glad you did.

The one thing missing is a native iOS keyboard which would make typing in ip addresses or hostnames a little easier.

Installing XBMC On Your Jailbroken iPad

1. Pop Open Cydia:

2. Go To Manage and click on Sources

3. Click On the Edit Button in the Top Right

4. Then Click on the Add button in the top left

5. Type in “mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/ios” and be sure not to erase the “http://” that’s already there. Now Click on “Add Source”. It will cut to a loading screen while it’s adding the repository info. Just sit tight until it goes back to the manage screen.

6. Click on the teamXBMC source

7. Click on the XBMC-iOS

app then click the install in the upper right. Sit back and wait cause the download can take a bit

8. Once it’s done go back to your Home screen and launch XBMC

9. You are going to have to turn your device on it’s side (landscape mode)

Now that you have XBMC on your Jailbroken iPad, let’s try playing a video from a network shared folder.

1. Click on Video

2. Click on “Add Source”. If you are on an iPhone 4, try using your pinky if you are having issues. This can get a bit discouraging.

3. Click the Add Button

4. Now fill in your shared folder location. Ex: smb://192.168.1.2. Then press done. It’s worth noting that this interface doesn’t really use the native iOS keyboard

and the UI keyboard will drive you a little nuts if your on the iPhone4 but it’s not too shabby on the iPad. Now navigate to the folder you just added. And try playing one of the files in there.

5. And you are off and playing video
