How To Turn Your iPad Into An Original Apple TV

I got an email last night from a reader that was pretty darn cool.  It’s a tip that I think you might enjoy quite a bit and it will even save you  some money.  Jai from Australia was kind enough to share how he was able to turn his iPad into an Apple TV.  Effectively eliminating the need to buy a dedicated Apple TV and save a little.

How To Turn Your iPad Into An Apple TV

turn iPad into Apple TV

Here is how he did it.  If you have an older TV that is not HDMI capable and you also do not have one of the older Apple TV’s which supported multiple ways to connect to older TV’s then you can do this instead:

  1. Hook up your iPad or iPad to to your TV with the Composite AV Cable kit which will cost around $48 depending on the deals you can find
  2. Turn on Home Sharing on your iMac, PC, or Laptop.  Here is an article on how to use iPad iOS 4.3 Home Sharing

Now just make sure that your iPad is also participating in Home Sharing and you should be able to “see” your movies, music, and videos that are all stored on your Mac, PC or Laptop.  But the best part is that you can now show this via the Composite cable on your TV.

Essentially, you have now saved time and money surfing around for an original Apple TV and you can enjoy all the same benefits for less than $50.

    Shane,

What is an original Apple TV and why do we want one? Thanks.

    1. Shane says:

Hi Liz. The original apple tv was the first one apple released a few years ago and it connected to your tv so you could show your photos, buy and rent movies and tv shows and play music through your home entertainment center.

They don’t sell it anymore and now all you can buy is the newer apple tv :)

They are great if you like renting movies and tv shows and super easy to use as well.

Well, there a one huge thing missing there: the remote!

    1. Hi Nuno – oh yeah…you are right…well you can use the Apple Remote app that is free but there are no really good universal remote apps out there yet!!!

  3. Liz says:

Why is it better than watching the movies on your regular tv? (which I’m about to do in a minute)

    1. Hi Liz –

Well…depends on whom you ask…if you ask me then I’d say it’s better because it’s just super cool to be able to use technology this way….but at the end of the day its probably no different. The one thing I would say is that with your TV, you are limited to watching whatever your cable delivers but with this solution, it’s cool because you can rent and watch so many different movies, etc. and that’s where I really like it.

I think i see what you mean, Shane. Although you can get virtually any DVD from Netflix. But that is “old” technology.

(Personally, I borrow all my DVDs from the New York Public Library!)

        1. Shane says:

Yeah…it’s just one of those odd things where I say, “this might be neat to try” and it works out. At the end of the day, it really is no different…just a different way of doing the same thing :)
