When I first started writing this tutorial I was writing for 4.1 as it was anyone’s guess when iOS 4.2 would be released by Apple. Well Just before publishing this Apple decided to push out 4.2.1 today. So here I am rewriting my premiere tutorial on jailbreaking the iPad with iOS 4.2.1. And pay no attention to my tears due to deleting my 4.1 tutorial.
Quick Background
This jailbreak method was developed by a long time hacker who goes by the handle geohot. His method ( named linmera1n ) was useful in jailbreaking 4.1 and is still in play
as the exploit is hardware based. The first (and only ) program out the door to incorporate the right hooks to jailbreak 4.2.1 is called RedsnOw.
Note: iPhone 4/3gs/3g, iPod touch 4/3g/2 g (non-MC model) and iPad both wifi and 3G are all supported with this latest release. But this latest release has still has some bugs to work out and new devices such as the iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC Model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G, only work on a tethered basis. This means in order to boot the device into a working jailbroken set you need the aid of redsnOw (directions follow the initial jailbreak method) . Old devices like iPhone 3GS (old bootrom), iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (Non-MC Model) can be jailbroken-untethered. So let’s dive in.
Disclaimer: tcgeeks.com takes no responsibility for your device getting hosed in anyway. I would be happy to help answer any of your questions but don’t blame us if something nasty happens.
iPad Jailbreak 4.2.1 With RedsnOw Walkthrough
Preface: All the screen shots are still valid but were taken last night before 0.9.6b4 was release so just ignore that it’s 0.9.6b3.
1. First download the latest redsnOw beta ( 0.9.6b4 just released this morning ) from one of these links depending on your OS.
2. Plug in your device to your computer and open iTunes if it doesn’t automatically launch.
3. iTunes should pop up with a 4.2.1 update, but if not go to your iPad under ‘devices’ and click on the update button under the picture of your iPad. You’ll get a dialog pretty much as usual. Press continue and then “Update” on the dialogue after. Then Next and you must agree to the EULA after that. This is pretty much the standard legit apple update process that you’ve gone through before, not all that scary.
4. Now wait for the download of the latest iOS image for your device. I suggest making a sandwich or watching a podcast or TV show. ( mine took 25 minutes on a cable modem).
5. Uncompress the redsnOw zip file and the .exe in the case of Windows. Double click on the redsnOw app if your running on a OSX machine.
6. Here is where things get a bit tricky when you click on browse be sure to select the 4.2.1 ipsw you just downloaded and installed on your device. If you need a copy here are the official links.
7. Next you’ll be presented with a screen to select packages. At the very least be sure to select Cydia ( this is the app that allows you to install jailbroken apps on your device), consider it a necessity. When you’re ready press next.
8. The next screen you will be prompted put your device into DFU mode. This is a debugging mode built in by apple that almost all jailbreaking techniques employ. Follow the on screen instructions exactly to get in into this mode. It will immediately start the jailbreaking process on your device once you get it into DFU mode.
9. After that your device will reboot into a freshly jailbroken device running iOS 4.2. Enjoy and Explore.
10. Run redsnOw again but this time instead of selecting “Install Cydia” select the option “Just boot tethered right now” option. This will reboot your device in a jailbroken state where you can actually use Cydia.
Now What?
If you’re asking “now what?”, Open the Cydia app on your device and have a look around.
So that is how to perform an iPad jailbreak with iOS 4.2.1 using RedsnOw. Once you are all done, you can now enjoy and explore the Cydia app store and try out some new things such as customizing your theme, changing your icons, or trying out some apps that you probably have not even seen before.
Many people want to know about the “untethered” jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, but again here is the latest word:
At the moment you can only enjoy tethered jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.6b4. We hope that Comex will release its untethered jailbreak for new devices like iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC Model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G. Devices like iPhone 3G, 3GS old bootrom, non-MC model iPod Touch 2G can be jailbroken untethered with Redsn0w 0.9.6b4.

Thank you, but when can we anticipate the untethered version for the ipad?
Hey Richard. I’ll check into it but things are moving pretty fast so I will also issue an update when they do. Thanks for the comment!
anyone can u help me out, how do i back up the i pad software 4.2.1? if i mistaken while jailbreak iz there any way to get it back since i am new user for apple, and where is ipsw and how do i get shsh file,i have downloaded redsnow and unziped but when i double click where can i browse ipsw file? i am really bored only using safari, since its not jailbreak
i just did it and it worked at first until i tryed to download somthing. then is got stuck on the apple symbol so i did what you said and now i cant restore it, people pls help me i dont want 550 bucks to go down the drain!!!!
Hi Dylan…in the comments there is someone else that solved this too…dis you see that in there? I can’t recall what they did but it’s up in the comments and will fix it for ya!
Yea i did what they said i changed the mode and stuff, then they told me a second option was to restore it but for some reason it when i tryed to restore(i tryed multiple times) it woul download like 1/4 of the way then it would say it could not restore….. any other advise thanks
never mind to the last comment. i read your comment wrong…. i looked just about every where on the comment i cant find the second option!! thank you for your help
Has anyone tried this method at all? I am tempted to do it, but really hesitant due to JB being tethered.
100% Tested and Working Method.
Jose, a reader just did and it worked great!
I tried this method, and whenever it gets to the point where it is jailbreaking the ipad, I get an “unexpected error”… the ipad freezes up, and I have to restore to an older version (3.2.2) using itunes which accesses cydia as I have my SSH blobs stored there. Any advice on this problem?
thanks in advance.
jason
Jason,
About your freezing issue. After the initial jailbreak you need to re-run redsn0w to boot into the jailbroken state. Follow from step 10 on in the tutorial. Please note if you install certain apps ( they rely on a framework called Mobile Substrate) you will need to reboot using resn0w or your boot will freeze and you will need to start all over with a restore. I hope this resolves your issue.
Works well — tested out.
Thanks a lot my iPad 4.2.1 3G 64GB is now Jailbroken…
You are MORE than welcome Jose! Hey, let us know what you find the most interesting now that it is jailbroken!
how u jailbreak a ipad 4.2.1
Note the most important word here: TETHERED (for iPad). For most practical purposes, tethered jailbreak is not useful/usable. For those already jailbroken, better wait for untethered version to come out. If you never tried jailbreak and want to just try it, feel free to play with tethered version, but you cannot rely on jailbreak to be always available (away from your PC/Mac).
Jimmy. Thanks for that info. I think the key is definitely “tethered”. And I am looking forward to the “untethered” version…
Will this method work for iPhone as well? I have a feeling it will…someone please confirm. Thanks so much!
It will work for iPhone, yes. What model do you have?
Thanks for super FAST response, Shane! I have a 3gs with the old bootrom. I am updating to 4.2.1 as I type…well after I update iTunes. LOL
Given that I have the old bootrom, my JB will be “untethered.” Is that correct?
You are more than welcome! This is a blog that answers back
Yes, with the old bootrom yours will be untethered…
Just in case you need it, here is the link to the ipsw for the 3gs:
http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4/061-9895.20101122.Cdew2/iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Restore.ipsw
Thanks, i just downloaded it (kinda took forever if you ask me…LOL)! I love you blog! Definitely subscribing!!
Yeah, it took Brad quite a long time too! I have no clue why it takes so long unless so many people are accessing it. Once you get access to the Cydia app store, feel free to let me know what stuff you find really cool and I’ll share it with others.
Thanks on the blog compliment!
Thanks! I will definitely do that!! My 3gs has been sitting in my drawer since September and I am so tired of using my slow and buggy 3g! FINALLY! =)
Oddly enough I have one sitting in my desk drawer! I guess this means I’m getting it prepped for a jailbreak! Long live the 3GS
I have a question. Hypothetically. If you have untethered jailbroken ipad (from the previous firmware, have not updated the firmware to 4.2.1) and some stuff installed on it (installuous etc.) and let’s say an untethered jailbreak for the 4.2.1 comes out. Can the device be updated, jailbroken and the settings and programs be saved without wiping em out?
Thanks!
Hypothetically speaking you should. However, I’ll lay my bets that as soon as the untethered hits, you will find that the jailbreak wipes the iPad….that being said, I’m going to see if there is a way to save your apps and settings as a sort of “backup”.
From Geohot’s website… slightly modified
Open Mobile Terminal (you can get it from Cydia)
Enter this command: “dpkg –get-selections> installed-apps.txt” (no quotes
Now we have created the Cydia app list file which called “installed-apps.txt” in ” / var / mobile ” (for me it was in the root dir)
You are done, use your favorite SFTP client (Cyberduck (Mac OS X) or WinSCP (Windows) to SHH into your device).
To reinstall…
Put your “installed-apps.txt” to “/ var / mobile”, after reinstalling Cydia and Terminal, type these commands:
“su”
Type your password (default password: alpine)
“dpkg –set-selections ”
“apt-get dselect-upgrade”
If you found problems type this command: “apt-get dselect-fix-missing-upgrade”
Now Cydia will automatically reinstall all your packages.

Vic – thank you VERY much. Appreciated.
Richard,
See the reply from Vic – very useful
When I try to run redsn0w on the “install cydia” step, I get the unknown error problem. This has happened to me at least a dozen times. I’m running off windows vista home version and trying to jail break the iPad 64gb wifi only version
Chris,
Hi – there was a comment by Brad regarding the freezing – did you try that workaround?
I’m about to try it. Now I have a bunch of jail broken apps on my iTunes account, once jail broken, will I be able to sync and get those back as long as I dont do a restore?
Hey guys, just wanted to quickly check in to say that this tutorial worked for the iPhone as well. Only addition was to tick the option to add the “ipad baseband.” Other than that, it worked flawlessly! Thanks so much.
@Chris: Redsnow kept freezing for me as well when I used it in compatibilty mode on my vista. The solution I came up with this morning was to start off fresh on my XP netbook. WORKED FLAWLESSLY. I’d try getting my hands on an XP and do it from there. Good luck!
Gi,
thank you very much for reporting back….much appreciated. What step did you need to tick the “ipad baseband” on?
so cydia works fine on the ipad using this jb method? ive been reading elsewhere that cydia wont even start after jailbreaking using redsn0w
thanks.
Hi Olegs,
Several readers have reported that as long as you follow all the directions exactly….then yeah it definitely works!
Seems that there is upcoming untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 real soon – http://bit.ly/feyD1F
Thanks Richard!!! This would be GREAT for everyone trying to limp by on the tethered version
Shane, when you get to the part where you tick “install cydia” you also have to tick “install ipad baseband.” since this tutorial was bases on the old version of redsnow, I don’t think it was shown on the screenshots. Also, for those wanting to use this method for iPhone…just an fyi that currently, all cydia tweaks are not compatible with 4.2.1. They will be…eventually but not right now!
Thank you Gi – i’ll updated the article to reflect this! I appreciate it.
Chris, are you saying you already have your “cracked/jailbroken” apps on your itunes account? If you already have then synced on itunes theb you won’t lose them. But just to be safe, after installing them on your device, plug in to your computer and hit “transfer purchases”
I am on an xp computer now, I have backed up my files to this computer and I can’t find my Ipsw because the update was done n my vista, how do I get around this?
Chris,
Vista stores your ipsw files in C:/users/”USERNAME”/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/ copy from there to somewhere you can easily find on your XP machine. If your restoring from a ipsw in a non-standard location on windows you can press restore while holding the shift key to bring up a browse dialogue to point to the ipsw you want to restore from.
I just bought my Ipad and it came with 4.2.1 so where do i find the firmware if it wasnt updated?
Hi Myra,
You are on the latest – but all you have to do is plug it into your computer and when iTunes is opened up, it will tell you if you need to update the iPad and then there will be an option to do so.
I am trying to jailbreak my ipad wifi on windows 7. Redsn0w keeps freezing when it get to uploading ramdisk. Any suggestions?
What works on my box: compatibility settings @ Windows Vista SP2 and then run as administrator.
Cheers, Dela
This tip worked perfectly for Windows 7!!
thanks this really helped me.
how long does it take to jailbreak the ipad? my situation is that its getting stuck on the uploading ramdisk part.
Michael what system are you using? If you are on vista run it as admin on windows xp compatibility. If that doesn’t work, switch over to an xp machine. That’s what i had to do to successfully jb and unlock my iphone yesterday.
Gi,
I can’t say thanks enough for helping out! When the t-shirts are done, you can pick one out you want…
I completely missed this post. Heck yeah sign me up for a shirt! Wooot!! =)
Shane I’m going out on a limb here and guessing you’ll know almost straight away when there is an untethered JB for iPad 4.2.1. I am currently running a tethered JB iPad 4.2.1 thanks to this tutorial so thanks there. How would I go a bouts getting informed of said new JB.
Hi Stuart!
I am nearly certain I will know – Brad (who wrote the awesome tutorial) is in the loop and I also have my feelers out constantly for the “untethered” version. I will do a blog announcement once that is confirmed and that it’s confirmed to work!!!
p.s. thanks for the comment and for stopping by!
Thanks for the tutorial, i have only one problem. when i try to start cydia it automatically shuts down, maybe i have done something wrong?
Hi Quinby!
There are a few replies in the comments above from Gi and Brad that are really helpful when this happens. The question is about freezing, but, the solution will most likely solve your issue as well! Let me know if it does not!
Hi Shane. Appreciate the blog and rapid responses.
Jailbroke my iPad as per your guide and I managed to get everything I wanted from Cydia. Problem I’m having now is that my iPad refuses to boot normally. It will only boot in DFU mode.
Any ideas?
You are more than welcome! I appreciate you for stopping by so it’s not a problem at all to respond!
Hmmmmm, ok…withe the DFU mode issue, let me check with Brad and see – although one question. Are you booting it tethered?
Hazza,
This is due to it being a “tethered jailbreak”. Every time you need to reboot or shutoff the device you need to use redsn0w to boot into the OS, otherwise you it will temporarily brick your device and you’ll have start all over again with a restore then jailbreak it again.
I think I just bricked my iPad using this tutorial. I used redsnow to jailbreak 4.2.1, upgrading from jailbroken 3.2.2. After installing Cydia, applying updates, and rebooting into jailbreak state using redsnow the iPad will no longer boot; the only thing I am able to do is look at a white apple with a black background. I cannot get it to enter DFU mode by the power button / home button method. Any suggestions? Help is much appreciated.
Ryan,
I think a step was missed or you didn’t reboot the device using redsn0w properly ( the device needs to be in DFU mode for both the cydia install and the tethered jailbreak boot, any other mode will result in bricking the device). I suggest reboot your device while plugged in ( reboot by holding the power and home button), right after it power off part of the reboot hold the home button. This will bring you into restore mode ( an iTunes logo will appear). From here you will be able to restore your device with the 4.2.1 firmware. Once restored and you wish to attempt this jailbreak again I suggest you confirm that you are following the directions to the letter. I’m writing a post of “what to do when a jailbreak goes sideways”
Thank you for your speedy reply, as you might have guessed I was stressed; to say the least. I was able to restore back to un-jB 4.2.1 . My guess is one of the packages I upgraded from Cydia caused the temp brick. I might tinker around with it a bit and post what I find here. Again, thank you for the tutorial, the help, and the speedy replies.
Hey Ryan,
Try this solution from B. McMahon
December 1, 2010 | 9:05 am
Hazza,
This is due to it being a “tethered jailbreak”. Every time you need to reboot or shutoff the device you need to use redsn0w to boot into the OS, otherwise you it will temporarily brick your device and you’ll have start all over again with a restore then jailbreak it again.
Thanks again Gi
Ryan, sorry to hear you are having some issues…
Here are a couple of things:
Are you holding Home and Lock for 10 sec exactly while the device is plugged into your machine? Then releasing the lock button and holding the Home button until prompted in iTunes that it needs a recovery?
It sounds crazy but some have said that at about 7 seconds it goes into DFU mode…..
let me know!
Honestly, not sure of the exact time. I just followed the timeline that redsnow displays. Immediately following the jailbreak, rebooting, opening Cydia, and during the installation of packages the ios apple logo and ios loading bar were displayed (as if it were doing an ios update) and the screen flickered multiple times. I let Cydia finish, then turned off the iPad, and tried to reboot into jB state with redsnow. Not sure exactly what happened, but I will try and redo the steps I took to temp brick it and I will let you know what I did wrong so others dont follow my lead. Ha. Thank you both for your help.
I have jailbroken my ipad but the cydia app is white and does not open. Should i jailbreak it again and what is redsnow boot tethered. How do I do that.
Oh i figured it out, i re jail broke my ipad then did boot tethered. At first id didn’t know what boot tethered was until i saw it as one of the options much later. Problem solved.
Alan,
Thanks for updating us!! We are working on a “troubleshooting” post and your feedback will really help so thanks for that! Much appreciated.
UPDATE: My earlier temporary brick state was due to installing winterboard (and required mobile substrate). SO, lesson learned… DON’T INSTALL WINTERBOARD.
Ryan….THANKS!!!! This is much appreciated and I’m just glad you found the bad app!!!!!
Trying to use redsn0w but the app keeps crashing any ideas? this is the message I get

Hey everyone, do you know if the untethered jailbreak for iPad 4.1.2 will be released in the next 5 days? It’s just i was going on holiday then, so i wanted to get some free apps from cydia. Thanks
Hi Sam!
I had the same question but there is no date yet for the “untethered” – apparently the entire code set needs to be reverse engineered and that’s no small task
Okay thanks Shane! Would you be able to let me know as soon as it is released please? Thanks
Absolutely Sam! I’ll email you when I know even a rumor
Is it necessary to use the latest redsn0w release 0.9.6b6 to update my ipad?
Thanks
redsn0w 0.9.6b6 has no advantages over 0.9.6b4 for iPad. It was released for 3g/3gs owners who want to unlock their phone. Unlocking means to make your device carrier agnostic. So either version will do the same for your iPad.
Not update, meant jailbreak.
Hi all,
I’m on an 3.2 JB ipad and would like to know whether all my apps from Installous will be gone after the 4.2 upgrade and jailbreak. Thanks for the great write up and help.
always get stuck on exploiting with limerain my device is ipod 3g mc model.pls i need some help guys.
You need to use redsnow with a 3G, limerain doesn’t work. That’s what I found when doing mine on 4.1
redsnow with 3g? is there any tutorial for that jb im not familiar with or if possible could you send a download link for redsnow with 3g?i need it badly
thanks in advance!
Just follow this tutorial but instead of downloading the ipad firmware use the firmware you have on your phone. It should be in C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. If its not there you google iphone 3g firmware you should get a site.
ive tried the instruction just the way youve told me but i still have a problem this version of redsnow doesnt support the ipod 2g mc model yet what should i do next?
thanks for the help guys.
Hello! I did the jailbreak on my ipad with the 4.2.1 but when I open cydia and go sources or anything on cydia there is nothing to choose from. I tried to install different sourcer which it starts to update sources and then it starts to reload data but then is just kicks out of cydia and I reopen cydia but still has nothing in it. Is there something that I am doing wrong. Thanks.
Cheers mate work well on my iPad & was easy to do.. Some apps like yourtube won’t work with tethered but that’s ok cause I just want mywi to take advantage of vodafones unlimited iPad plan
& mywi work fine..
Thanks once again
Hi ben!!! Hey thanks for the comment…and glad this helped…you mentioned an app you wanted to use and I wondered what your favorite ones are?
Hey Shane my fav apps are MyWi, SBsettings, 3G unrestrictor, YourTube, insatallous & Fullforce.. There were a few others for multitasking & categories but with the new 4.2.1 for iPad I don’t believe they are necessary anymore…
As you can see they are all apps to inhance your IPad experience which I strongly believe should have come from apple out of the box… Except installous of-course lol…
Ben you rock! Thanks…yeah…the one app I would like to see is the one where we get a bluetooth mouse to work with the iPad…which I thought existed but I could be dreaming too…
I been trying to jailbreak my ipad but it’s stuck at 2 bar in the ramdisk upload, what can i do ?
Hey i tried this on my ipod touch 2nd gen non mc model and when it gets to the waiting for reboot it flashes white then turns to a black screen while it uploads the ramdisk then it just stays on a black screen untill i turn it off then back on and its still not jail brocken. Help?
Please help, I am having big trouble with my iPhone 4. I just now jailbroke it with redsn0w 0.9.6b4. Soon after, I tried to install Winterboard. After downloading, I clicked the box for “restart iPhone” to finish the install.
Now it is not restarting. It keeps trying to restart, but never makes it. I have a black screen with an illuminated apple in the center. Every once in a while, it goes black and “tries again” to restart. Can anyone help? I feel like my iPhone is broken!!
Brady,
This is a tethered jailbreak, this means you can’t restart/ reboot/ power off and back on with out runing redsn0w to boot your device back into a jailbroken mode. In your case You will need to restore your device and re-jailbreak your device and keep in mind that your jailbreak is tethered. I will be posting a tutorial later today to address common problems.
Thanks, B. McMahon. I didn’t know that every single reboot and power on/off had to be under redsn0w. This is kind of annoying, but at least its pretty easy once you have done it a few times. Let me know when you post that tutorial, I’d be interested to read.
when i try to open the iso file in redsnow their are none that can be loaded. i unziped placed on desktop browsed to folder opens several folders all_flash.k48ap and dfu. these have nothing in them. any help please emailme. Thanks
Ivy,
you are not looking for iso files, it’s ipsw file and it really depends on your system where it would be located. This will be included in the common jail break issues tutorial being posted tonight.
Same thing happened to me Brady! How do you reboot with redsnow? I restored several times and it does suck! Does winterboard work with redsnow? sbsettings wouldnt reboot either niether did mywi! ARGGGG! I am new to this so whatever you pro’s can tell me would be greatly appreciated!
Hey Shane I will do some research & if I come across an app that fit that description I will let u know.. Cheers from down under
I did the whole process twice and some things don’t work after the end of the tutorial.
1 – Safari is dead (when I touch it doesn’t start.
2 – Cydia is dead (the same).
3 – I can’t install my cracked apps.
I found a explanation on how to reboot tethered.
Thanks a lot!
Hi, may I ask 1 question, I just bought iPad 4.2.1 and I restart it, now it appear only apple logo, it make me boring, does iPad 4.2.1 can’t restart? I have 4 ipad near me now, and all of them have only apple logo. Help
After I go thru the process on my iPhone 4 it hangs up on the loading screen with the pineapple. Is there any quick fix for this? After it sat for about 20 minutes I just had to restore the factory setting thru iTunes. I just want to make sure if I try it again I don’t want to screw up the phone to the point that I can’t use it. Has anyone else had issues like this?
i saw ur post form 12-7-10 on http://www.tcgeeks.com/ipad-jailbreak-4-2-1-redsnow/
did u ever find a soultion of the pineappple if u did please tell me
Hey Shane,
Thanks for the great guideline.
I’ve tried, just as you wrote. Unfortunately I’ve faced ‘unexpected error’. Tried Jason’s solution, but didn’t work.
Restored, updated, re-run the whole process several times, but it doesn’t work.
Is it possible, that a newer 4.2.1 came out which the process doesn’t work with?
I have 4.2.1. (8c148)
Or I have something really ‘burnt in’? Should I have to make some even harder ‘deep’ reset?
All help appreciated.
Hi there Shane!
I´m having problems jailbreaking my iPad 3g 16gb with ios 4.2.1.
Redsn0w always stucks when “Exploiting with limera1n”. Tried at least 10 times now. Read about other who has this problems, but found no solution?
Can anyone here help me?
Hi There Alex –
Someone here might be able to most definitely – also – Brad is working on a really GREAT troubleshooting document that will be posted in the next day or two.
But I wanna jailbreak now
No tips at all?
LOL….let me see if I can drum up a tip or too real quick…..
Standing on my toes…
@Alex, are you using Windows Vista/XP? Scroll up and look at one of my posts earlier. I had the same thing happen to me more than 10 times–Redsnow was stuck on “uploading ramdisk.” This happened when I used Vista on XP compatibility. The next day I tried it on an XP machine and it worked flawlessly. Try getting your hands on an XP machine and see if it goes through. Hope this helps!
Gi! You are the GREATEST! Thanks
Hey guys, looks like untethered jb for all devices on 4.2.1 will come out before Christmas! Check this link out http://www.mob2all.com/2010/12/ios-421-untethered-jailbreak-confirmed.html
Thanks Gi,
I’m gonna do a quick post about this so others know too. You are super awesome!
I have no xp machine. Only windows7
Hey guys quick question,
Since this is a tethered jb, does that mean the apps i get from cydia won’t work unless it’s plugged in or just that cydia itself won’t work?
Matt – pretty sure it means that cydia itself won’t work but the apps certainly should outside of the “tether” as it were….I have heard news that untethered jailbreaks are on their way…
Thanks a lot. I done it!!! At xp .
Paul – That’s AWESOME!!!!!!
hey guys can anyone help me or tell me why please.
i jailbroke my ipad 4.2.1 with Redsnow (tethered)and now my installous downloads are really slow at 4kb its painful. Been waiting half an hour and only 4MB has downloaded.
My brothers ipad which was jailbroken on 3.2.1 by pwnage tools works just fine.
Lawrence,

Installeous relys on filesharing sites like fileape and megaupload. These sites make their money by people paying for access to faster downloads, the free downloads fluctuation depending on the number of people accessing the site. In short, it has nothing to do with your phone.
Thanks Brad….
hey guys what happend to me was i did the jailbreak fine got a few apps and downloaded a app that bricked my ipad how do i restart my ipad without it freezing and stop working.
Stay away from the cydia app WINTERBOARD!!!
thanks.
Hi, I’ve got an iPad with OS4.2.1 Baseband 7.10.00. Is it safe to jailbreak it with redsn0w 0.0.6 b6 based on the tutorial above?
Cheers.
i cant even open the redsnow application ….any advice to open the redsnow application ???
Is there a way to get cydia off of my Ipad when i want to?
Dear Lawrence,
i just “tether only” my ipad since someone got it turned of..but now some of my games just doesnt have any sound..do you have any idea of whats going on?
i tried to open ipod and all songs still have sounds except some of the games
thanks
After I go through the redsn0w program and check install cydia and I enter DFU mode, it gets to Uploading RAMDISK and gets stuck on the first block and doesnt progress any further. Im using an Ipad 30gb Wi-Fi with 4.2.1 installed on it.
Im also using Windows 7 Professional 64bit.
Just run redsn0w as administrator to fix the ramdisk upload bug
I get stuck on part 6. I dont understand what to browse
Hi Justin. Basically you are browsing for the ipsw that you downloaded in step 4/5. It should be unzipped and in a folder. Do you not get one?
When this method is used, can an earlier baseband be preserved?
Hey! I recently got the Ipad, and was wondering is it really worth it to go with a tethered jailbreak. If it is, i’m going for it!
Hey Dan! Thanks for the comment. There is a rumored untethered jailbreak within days so you might wanna wait!!!
Alright, thanks for the heads up! Can’t wait till untethered.
You are more than welcome. I figured I would save you the headache
Here is my issue … please help … i have carefully implemented all steps that were mentioned, even got the Done screen in redsnow.
But the ipad is not jailbroken and there is no cydia installed.
The process of updating rmdisk takes 2 seconds and the ipad reboots like it was before.
NO CYDIA
NO BOOT FROM REDSNOW REQUIRED.
i have a 16GB ipad without 3G.
Thanks in advance
Alin
Alin,
Did you follow this last step ?
Run redsnOw again but this time instead of selecting “Install Cydia” select the option “Just boot tethered right now” option. This will reboot your device in a jailbroken state where you can actually use Cydia.
To be honest it sounds like you skipped installing cydia and just did the “Just boot tethered right now”. It’s a pretty common mistake. I’d just try to Install Cydia, then run redsn0w and then run through the step above.
Posting a comment so i can get updates for untethered!!!
)
I have tried this with 2g ipod touch (MC model) but cannot get it to work. I keep getting the unexpected error while exploiting with limer1a. I found a redsnow fix on youtube that was guaranteed to work but it didnt. same problem. Help anyone?
Any update on progress/release for the untethered iPad jailbreak?
John. I’ve heard two updates! One is that comex will not have one ready yet but then the dev team reports that within the next few days we will see untethered. Brad will have an excellent tutorial as well!!!
Everytime i jailbreak t with all these steps i always get stuck on the intalling ramdisk part, it never finishes. I’m using IPad 4.2.1 wifi. Any help?
Those of you who are wringing your hands in anticipation of the untethered
jailbreak for 4.2.1 and are dreading the process it will involve might not have to worry.
This post from comex on the 22nd mentions he is working on a cydia package to
untether devices already jail-broken.
“it’s probably going to be a Cydia package. if I can get it to work.”
https://twitter.com/comex/status/17418551816097792
Seeing as the iPhone-dev team have a working method for an untethered jailbreak
and with comex’s recent post that he might miss his Christmas eve deadline rumors
flying that they might release their method. Though it’s know this method requires
the iOS 4.2 beta 3 SHSH blobs to be able to work. But for now all eyes are on
comex’s twitter feed.
-Brad
For all those who have heard about the untethered JB – please read this post FIRST because it’s only Beta and there are a lot of restrictions. Brad is working on a Tutorial as well.

Have the same problem as Dan with iPad 64gb wifi:(
Any ideas why??? Please help…
Julie! I figured out why mine didnt work. Redsnow will not work on windows 7 i believe. I tried it on my vista computer and it worked like a charm. So im guessing widnows xp and windows vista are the only windows software redsnow will work on, hope this helped!
Dan..thanks for the awesome reply to Julie…
p.s. getting ready to post the tutorial for the beta untethered version of RedsnOw
Shane, do you know if theres a beta for windows???
unfortunately…it’s only for Mac right now – but that’s because they are trying to keep it as “simple” as possible until they have a full non-beta version is my guess
Thanks Dan:)
Tried on vista this morning and it worked:)
THANK YOU:)
YOUR WELCOME!
I did the method, but my iPad is freezing (on the Apple screen) during the retart, when I turned off! What’s the problem?? The Cydia is well intalled and running perfect!
Hey Thiago,
As previously mentioned, you have to run redsnow again but this time, tick “boot tethered right now” option. Follow all the steps and redsnow should reboot your device in a few minutes
I have used it and when i go into tethered and after isntalling installus it frezzes and i have to restore it.
Also been experiencing issues with win 7 and attempting to jailbreak an ipad wifi… read above and seems as though win 7 is no good with this… happy to try on an xp machine, however i can’t due to the ipsw file being on my win 7 machine… the link in the tuturial above doesnt have an ipsw file to select after downloading it, anyone found a way to get around this??
No, this is wrong. I have Win 7 and I’ve used this technique almost 6 times now to jailbreak my iPad (4.2.1) with NO issues whatsoever. (My iPad keeps freezing up, but I think that’s another issue.) Anyone who can’t get it to work is simply doing something wrong. It works like a charm.
So I tried to do this on my iPad and it continually freezes on uploading ramdisk, then my iPad restarts and isn’t jailbroken. What can I do to fix this?
hi,
i can not made the download the file osx redsnow
can you help me?
Anyone who is freezing at ramdisk I found something that helped me. I opened redsnow and went to the task manager. Went to processes and right clicked on redsnow.exe…. Set affinity and make sure CPU 1 is checked and others are not. Once I did this it worked on my first try. Hope this helps
Mine stops at Exploiting with limerain? Any ideas? It does reboot my Ipad wifi, but no cydia. i also tried the next step after the initial reboot.
Hey! I NEED HELP!!! I just jailbreaked my iPad 4.2.1. But then later on, I can’t turn on the iPad. Even though I turn it on, there’s only a apple sign and nothing happened. SO what can I do? Please help!!!
I keep having this same problem. My iPad keeps freezing and I have to restore it and then re-jailbreak it. I’ve had to do this several times since I got it on Xmas. WTF? So annoying. Is there anything I can do to protect it from crashing? I can’t have an un-jailbroken iPad; that’s just not an option.
I’m Trying to Jailbreak my iPad running 4.2.1 with Redsn0w but when I’m on the DFU mode phase,It’s not working well,I follow the steps perfectly but It doesn’t boot so the jailbreak won’t complete.
Anyone mind help me out how to fix this issue pls?
hey.i have the ipod 16gb, and i tried doing the process but in the second step.
the option “Just boot tethered right now” option is not available. instead its verbose boot, custom boot logo, and so on. what do i do?

I have the same problem! cydia isnt working on my ipod 2 gen 4.2.1. i have the newest version of redsn0w on my computer and my ipod is jailbroken but cydia isnt working. someone said i had to boot tether it, but that isnt an option when i open up redsn0w!
someone please help!!!
Hi,
Jailbreaking with 0.9.6b5 of my upgraded (3.2.2 to 4.2.1) 64GB 3G seems to be working fine.
It is the tethered rebooting that seems to be the problem in my case.
The Cydia icon remains white and I can’t install ‘loose’ .ipa’s, only the iTunes Store install works. I have repeated the JB and reboot many times, always with the same results.
I am also a little puzzled about the switching off of my iPad. When I do the 3 sec. thing with the red slider it switches off. But when I do that while ‘tethered’ to my PC, it will switch off, and subsequently switch back to the Apple logo within 5 secs. Some time after that it will turn on with the normal slider start screen. So essentially I can’t switch my iPad off while ‘tethered’ to my PC. Is that normal?
Forgot to mention: Windows 7 Ult. 64bit
I need help!!
I have a Ipod touch 3g firmwire 4.2.1. Modell MC… I tried to jailbreak it but it wont work.
First of all it freezes after the “hold this and that” steps. Then I just have to cancel…
What is happening? Read something in the beginning of tutorial that it would not work with a MC model. WHY?!?! What can I do?!
Hi, I am a new ipad user and have v.4.2.1. Itunes 10.1. I a wondering if I JB it, will I lose my purchased apps like Pages & Numbers?
I am using Citrix to remote into my PC so I can access work while I travel. I’d like to connect a mouse which is my reason for wanting to JB.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I just switched back to Mac after using PCs in the workplace for several years, so I have some catching up to do.
Ro,
1.) you will not loose anything if you choose to jailbreak. But you should be careful to follow the directions otherwise you might corrupt the boot sequence and then you’ll need to reflash your iPad which would cause you to loose your apps. The good news is you can just download them again without being charged again.
2.)If you download the BTstack package in cydia it will add support for bluetooth devices not supported by Apple (yes like a mouse, keyboards are already natively supported). It’s in the BigBoss repository.
i follow the steps, i have Ipad with 4.2.1 software, the first time it worked, but now when i press the Cydia or safari browser… it just like a flash and nothing happened any more..
what can i do…?
many thanks….
I try redsn0w and my firewall just goes berserk, detect it as a keylogger and detect it trying to modify some things like explorer.exe and even my battery manager? I get pissed and try to bite one corner of my screen.. broke one front tooth.. Is this prog safe or what?
JB ipad 4.2.1 everything worked well.until Ipad lost all its juice.then as people here have been saying all you see is an apple on black backrground for hours while charging.
Lesson Learned. Never let your tethered Ipad run out of battery or else you will end up with a bricked device.
@pol, hi mate, on the contrary your ipad is not bricked. just connect it to your pc again and hold all the keys (same procedure in entering DFU mode). if the screen goes black, JB it again using redsn0w but be sure to tick “boot tethered…” same thing happened to mine and now its working fine. Mind you, be sure to charge it before it looses it juice.
Regards.
Hey, just wondering where this untethered jailbreak is? Just lookin for a heads up!
Hi…
I’ve JB my ipad (iOS 4.2.1) using redsnow and application running well. unfortunately, if I have turn off my ipad by press the power button, safari, cydia, and i file can not open. if I click the icon, just flashing… Please direct me.

Hello,
I have got an problem with jailbreaking my iPod touch 3G 8g mc with redsnow. The problem is that it keeps on freezing When it says exploting l1mera.
I’m curently running on vista, and have tried with running
sry for double post, but wrote this on my iPod and acclidently hit publish..
(continue on my previous post) redsnow.exe as Windows XP and admin. I have had my iPod jailbreaked once with spirit back in 3.1 or something but removed it when the the new update came.
Thanks in advance!
so after i jailbreak my ipad, what do i need to do to be able to install cracked apps? is there a cydia package for it? or can i do it straight away
i have downloaded a few from apptrackr if it makes any difference
I used this method to jailbreak my ipad and it went perfectly fine until I accidentally turned it off. At first I panicked because it wouldn’t turn on and all I could see was the black background and the apple logo. I tried to hard reset it but it didn’t work. In the end, I ran redsn0w again and intead of choosing “Install cydia”, I chose “Just boot tethered right now”. After that, it went back to normal. Thanks for sharing this tutorial. It really helped me a lot.
Anyone else have this issue? I drained its battery earlier on and I can’t recharge it now.
I tried rebooting it several times but it just lost its juice after the my screen came up. Thanks.
If iPad is jailbroken using this method and has to be rebooted on the road and no tethered boot is possbile … What will happen:
a) will boot normally but cydia and installous apps will not work
b) it will not boot at all
Will it need to be jaibroken again or will tehtered boot put it back into jailbroken mode?
Have just come across this awesome blog and hope it can help with some queries I have.
I have a 16gig wifi ipad with OS 4.2.1 (and no saved blobs). I want to run GPS apps with it and apparently can do this with a GPS receiver but the ipad must be JBed. I will be using an iMac for the JB. A couple of questions I’d appreciate advice on please.
Are the instructions in the tutorial above still current? Will this JB allow bluetooth functionality and skype after the JB?
I gather an untethered JB is still not available?
Thanks
Hi chris! Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the compliment!! They are still current although with the beta for the untethered jailbreak there some updates that need to get posted!
I love your blog!! It helps me alot. very responsive too!
. My ipad is on iOS 4.2.1. Just bought it early this month. I get so annoyed with thethered JB, happened before with my iPhone3GS. I got iphone 4 JB on 4.1 still. so I’m gonna wait till the unthethered is here.
Keep us updates! U rock!
Thank you Liana!!! I appreciate it immensely…and I’ll keep the good stuff coming
Shane thanks for such a swift reply. I will try and do a thethered JB using your tut then when an untethered version comes along, presumably I’ll be able to upgrade to that ok?
Will you be posting more about how to do the untether if it comes out of beta?
You are more than welcome Chris! Yes, there will have a FULL tutorial with screenshots of the untethered…..which I hope is soon because people are definitely getting restless….It’s a lot of work do to though
Hi i dont kno what ma problem is i have à iphone 3gs mcmodel jailbroken 4.2.1 is actived with iTunes with Sam ore somthing but my iphone wont restrat after redsnow thetredboot help !!!!!!!!
Sorry for my english
hi thank you very much. my ipad is just jailbroken, but i have a question. i opened the Cydia. installed somethings. but every time it wants reboot device. and i rebooting it. but it is not rebooting!
Still seems Apple logo. What should i do?
i will wait ? it will be reopen by itself? or what ?
Thank you!
Sorry for my English..
I have ordered an Ipad and hopefully will try this next week. At the moment I have an ipod tocuh 2g but it is the MC model. What will happen if I try the above on it?
I am trying to use this method but I am unable to get past the step where you browse for the IPSW file. It is not there. I already had 4.2.1 on my IPAD so i downloaded the file again from the link provided and unzippd the files. There is no IPSW file in any of the folders. Did I miss something?
thanks for the directions, everything worked great! until i installed winterboard. after it installed i have to push “reboot device”, when i do this, it turns my iphone 4 osx 4.1.2 into a brick with just the silver apple logo on the screen. any ideas??
When I try this everything works until I try to install cydia, which it stops about 4 bars into downloading the Jailbreak data. (uploading ramdisk) Any ideas on why that happens and what I need to do to fix this?
When i click on the link for windows i get a “windows cannot open the folder”
The compressed folder………is invalid. what is this?
I did everything step by step to a T, when I relaunch ”unteathered” I never see this Cydia Icon?? Is this an app I have to download seperately or is it supposed to pop up on my device after I complete the redsnow hack?
Thx in advance for your help.
Hi everyone
I’m running 4.2.1 on my iPad. Do i need to wait until the next update, or will I be able to to jailbreak my ipad now?
Thanks
ive installed cydia and it dosent wanna load up.
the same thing her…
I did find a solution ..
All you have to do, is redrafting you mobile (or iPad,iPod) using redsn0w and the there’d tick( just boot tethered right now)
After booting you will be able to use Cydia.
Enjoy
Sorry, it’s restarting your mobile (auto correction :/ )
Since I never got a reply about my problem… any news on the tetherless Jailbreak?
Hey, just wondering when the untethered jailbreak will come out
Hi Dan….I’m gonna do a quick email and get the latest scoop! How come GeoHot isn’t working on one

Hi Shane,
What is the latest version of tethered jailbreak by Red snow?
I have read on many websites that redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 is the latest.
Please suggest if I should use the one given on your website or this one.
is itwork for ipad without 3g ???
For all following this thread right now, we just posted a tutorial on installing XBMC on your Jailbroken iPad! Brand wrote up an awesome install guide!
Does anyone know anything about the new greenpoisi0n program. There are a few vids floating around but I cant get it to work on my ipad. It gets to the itunes logo and stops.
i just got an ipad version 4.2.1 and id like to jailbreak it and been reading a lot about it and wanted to know if i need to do a tethered jailbreak first and then an untethered jailbreak or is their just an untethered one available.I’m also using windows.
Good evening,
So hope you can help me. I have done the whole Jailbreak of my iPad and all went well till I installed Appsync 4.2 to be able to add apps from my flash via itunes. After the installation the device needed to be rebooted which I did, but now it does not want to reboot. I tried rebooting it with redsnow by selecting the reboot with tethered option….it is stuck on exploiting with limera1n. Am I doing something wrong…BTW had itunes running but as soon as redsnow starts it closes iTunes. Please help me!

help… i downloaded the 4.2.1 ipsw file and when i go to broswe, i will click the folder and it will say there is no matching file. im trying to jailbreak my ipad (wifi) 64 gig. it is a 4.2.1
@ bryan
sometimes when you download file it changes the extension to .zip or some thing else .
so go to that folder manually and change the file extension to .ipsw and then browse with redsnow .
i hope thats all you need
hi, i am looking for some help. i am completely new to all this jail breaking stuff! i got my ipad 32g today, i have followed the steps but when i go to the step where you click ‘browse’, and select the redsnow file from my computer, there is nothing in the file? cant figure this out. any help much appreciated, thanks.
Shane,
I know this might be a common question, is there any update on the untethered JB?
also, with an untethered JB does that mean every time I reboot I won’t have to reconnect to the PC?
Thanks,
Kurt
@Kurt,
Unthered does mean you dont need a computer every time you boot and the Chronic Dev Team did develop the unthered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 the release date should be soon
John
I did everything required and when I browse and click my firmware I get an error saying that the firmware is not recognized or invalid. Was told that I must have the wrong firmware downloaded so I redownloaded it and changed it to Ipsw and tried again and still the same issue. My iPad is brand new and running on 4.2.1 firmware, I am very flustered. Any ides
I did everything required and when i turn on my IPAD – anything what IM seeing is apple logo and my IPAD is restarted and restarted, after 5 restart its show turn on the itunes when I turn to my pc – IPAD dont worked and cannot by restored – unknown error – Any ideas what i can do?
I can get so far bbut when it says downloading it keeps telling me that the program has stop working and my ipad has on it DOWNLOADING JAILBREAK DATA… so can someone please help me i really want this thanks
JAXON
But one thing I’m not sure about is that if i do this. Will i be able to update the firmware when apple releases a new one?
[I am aware I'll have to wait for the jailbreak of course but will it be possible to do "update" without bricking the device?]
hi,
is it safe to update to the new version of 4.2, my ipad is still running on 3.2.2 version, one of my friend updated and he says he lost the rotate function, and lots of problems….please advise.
Aravind
I realize this is redundant just JB my ipad and works fine. however I would really appreciated the unthethered version. any news yet????
Dont know if this is the correct place to put it but there is now a working untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 using Greenpois0n RC5
Thanks Stuart! Much appreciated
shane u seems like an exper just canu teach me the easy method for 4.2.1 version ipad to jb
I looked at that last evening
This one however works so well I do know that an unthethered version for this one is in the works and in beta but not available for us as yet I do hope it comes soon
BTW Stuart if you do try the Greenpois0n let me know how it works
downloaded and installed Greenpois0n so far works great!!
I forgot to add that I used it and it works fine and is very easy to use. I read on a few places though of people having trouble when they did the JB from a fresh setup. My was done on a tethered Jailbroken ipad and worked perfect.
when booting must i put the ipad in DFU mode ??
Hey guys it really works. i did everything you just said but i cant boot my device. any idea????
Did ctrl-f and didn’t find an answer; Can I stil sync this with Itunes so I can put my music and books on it?
Hey i just followed the steps to jailbreak my ipad and it worked. well i got a white cydia icon, but after following a tutorial i got it fixed.
however, my problem is i tried to install installous but cydia prompted me to upgrade essential packages and i selected yes, and my ipad has froze until now PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!! THX!!!!!!
what tutorial did u follow to fix the white cydia? because i have the same problem
This sounds great but I am hesitant to download due to the fear of a virus. Anybody downloaded it and experienced a virus?
I’m a little confused about the tethered vs untethered. With the tethered jailbreak, does it mean I can’t reboot my ipad once jailbroken, unless I’m tethered, or is it just rebooting into cydia that’s the issue? I don’t mind if it needs to be tethered for rebooting into cydia, but I do mind if it’s for every reboot.
Also, if I have any issues can this version be undone by restoring from itunes?
Also, if when 4.3 or 5 is released, would I need to restore and re jailbreak, or would I just rerun the above steps but point it to the newest OS release?
Thanks
Hey guys, i cant figure out how to download installous from this cydia. Can anyone give me a quick step process?
Anyway Thanks For The Great Tutorial…Its Done Well But When I Downloading Cydia Hd Theme On My Ipad 16GB 3G,after Rebooting My Device Its Froze…Can Someone Help Me About This? Now I Can’t Even Open My Ipad…REALLY NEED YOUR HELP GUYS….

I have the same problem! cydia isnt working on my ipod 2 gen 4.2.1. i have the newest version of redsn0w on my computer and my ipod is jailbroken but cydia isnt working. someone said i had to boot tether it, but that isnt an option when i open up redsn0w!
