Jazzing up the average platformer on iOS is a tough ask
JAZZ Trumps Journey For iPhone : This original iOS platform-action game makes a strong impression, putting players in the role of an African American trumpeter in New Orleans in the 1920s.
Overcoming racial oppression to start a band and win a damsel’s heart is refreshingly unique in an App Store pool dominated by the cute and fluffy. And it’s a looker, serving up a cartoonish world filled with stunning hand-painted backdrops (which are a bit fuzzy on iPad), plus the ability to amass retro photographs like in iOS standout, Bumpy Road. Best of all, the game features fantastic jazz!
Each level plays out in a start-to-finish fashion with obstacles to overcome, be it platforms to hop between, or walls to scale using well-timed jumps. There’s also the ability to pause certain moving objects or ledges in place, by playing the instrument. But the game falls short in its execution, as a deficiency of precision in both control and design belies some pretty sound ideas.
