If you have an iPad 3G data plan that was provisioned *after* the AT&T update that no longer allowed unlimited data plans then you probably want a way to keep track of you data usage and also know how much you have left. Fortunately, there is a great utility that lets you keep track of your data usage do you don’t go over your plan.
Data Genie HD is an iPad utility that helps you keep track of your data usage and a lot more. Most of the major data providers are all moving away from “unlimited” data plans so this is a great app to have with you.
Data Genie estimates how much data you can safely use without going over your plan. If you are getting close to going over your plan and you have a few days left in your billing cycle, the app can estimate how much you can use without going over. No matter what plan you are on, this iPad utility can help you out.
The app does a pretty good job but it can only estimate based on averages. It is fairly accurate but never rely on it to be 100%. As a utility it is really nice to be able to track your data usage especially if you are on a limited plan and for $0.99 you get a lot of information you would not have otherwise.
Don't the carriers provide some sort of utility to track data usage? I know Rogers does in Canada for the iPhone.
It's basic at best. AT&T tells you how much you have used but it's a cumbersome process to get too. They also don't provide any real good details on how certain activities use data. I'm sure in the future they will. Does Rogers do a better job?
