MaxJournal for iPad | Transform Your iPad Into an Elegant Daily Journal

Diary apps tend to fall into two categories –there’s the personal assistant style of app that organizes your appointment and schedules, then there’s the more relaxed type, based around the kind of journal in which some of us like to record the ins and outs of our day at it’s close, preferably with a nice hot drink and a curled-up pet snoozing somewhere nearby.

MaxJournal for iPad definitely falls into this second category, the design revolving around a virtual large-format journal of the type that can be found in expensive stationery shops. This instantly imbues it with an air of quality, oozing the sort of luxurious finger-appeal which makes it a pleasures to use.

The main interface consists of a large central page area with a dateline across the top which is also used for accessing the year and the month. Accompanying this is a set of small tabs down the left-hand side, each of which bears a date. When tapped, each tab brings up a whole page that corresponds to that day, ready to be filled with your thoughts and accounts of your exploits.

A cluster of button found on the upper right of the screen handles features such as: the comprehensive Export and backup options, a search feature that can target specific words within your entries, the online help system and the font. Also handy is password protection setting where you can protect your thoughts from nosey family. Photos and tags can be added, scrapbook style, in a panel on the right of the screen, and a large ‘Today’ button rounds things off, allowing you to zip right to the current day’s page with a single touch.

Tap a page and it zooms instantly to fill the iPad’s screen, tap once more and up pops the keyboard ready to make an entry. There is a choice of 16 different fonts of variable size, old favourits such as Helvetica and Marker Felt Wide being joined by more esoteric choices like Journal and Kayleigh, which lend a more handwritten feel to jottings.

Other than changing the size and font however, there seems to be no other text style formatting options available, a shame as it would be nice to be able to use Bold and Italic styles for extra expressive entries. Overall, MaxJournal for iPad is one of the best of this type of app that we’ve seen and it should definitely be considered at the relativity low price.
