iPad Printing On The Go With PrinterOn

If you are like me, you love your iPad as much as a person is comfortable admitting that they love an inanimate object. If there was one thing that would only make you love Apple’s crowing jewel just a little bit more it would be the ability to print a little easier. Of course the release of iOS 4.2 solved some people’s problems because they are now able to use AirPrint to send your documents or photos to any printer that is AirPrint enabled.

But what happens when you are on the road and suddenly find yourself without access to such a printer? PrinterOn is a simple app that will first determine your location using either an internet or built in GPS connection, depending on your device; to find designated “PrintSpots” around whatever city you are located in. Once you have found a PrintSpot close to you (usually a hotel but they can be anywhere that has a PrintSpot enabled printer) you can print inside the actual program that created the document.

The actual printing function is not exactly like AirPrint, instead of simply sending the job from the iPad to the printer using a network you actually email the document to the Print Spot’s designated email address much like you would email it to a friend or your office in other situations. Inside the PrinterOn app you can click the location you want the document sent and a whole host of information will appear what kind of printer you will be using, whether it can print in color or merely black and white and most importantly the email address of the printer. Then merely shoot the document to that email and you are done.

This particular app may not be great for everyday printer use the way a WiFi or Bluetooth printer at home would be, but when you are in another town or simply need something printed off and have no other way to go this can certainly work in a pinch.

PrinterOn is now available for the iPad, the iPhone and the iPod Touch and is a completely free app.
