Tetris meets Boggle meets insanely difficult brain teaser.
Whereas SpellTower subtly merges aspects of Tetris and Boggle into an addictive, stylish whole, Puzzlejuice is a more literal take, bludgeoning the two games together with a hammer.
At least this is a knowing kind of mental. You need to unlock powerups which involves sorting falling blocks, Tetris-style, to make solid lines; but instead of disappearing, they become letters from which you make words that subsequently explode, taking out nearby blocks. Success depends on you balancing shifting blocks and unearthing words in the chaos.
To help you along, groups of three or more like-coloured blocks can be tapped to reveal extra letters, and there’s a chain-based score mechanic to master. Less impressive are the controls, which aren’t quite tight enough when you’re under pressure, especially on the iPhone’s smaller screen. You’re limited to dragging across words, and we wish the dev had pilfered SpellTower’s tap-to-select system. Nonetheless, this is a game you’ll cherish and curse in equal measure.
