There are many pretenders to the crown but if you are looking to share your tweets or iOS 5 linked files and media with the rest of the world, there is one application that you are going to need.
With numerous excellent Twitter for iPad already on release the official Twitter application has some lofty competition to better and it does so with ease. Unlike the equally impressive official Facebook application, it would appear that the developers have matched visuals with functionality and delivered an app that is pleasing to the eye without being overly complex to use, as you dig beneath the glossy surface and you will soon discover a fantastic app and one that offers everything a fan could want matched with quick access and ease of use.
Every Tweets, from the sublime musings of Stephen Fry, hilarious rantings of Rainn Wilson to the shilling emptiness of the latest consumer product, we don’t share information anymore, we tweet! This mass adoption of this quick form of social networking goes to explain the huge array of Twitter clients that litter the App Store, some are a good most are bad and only one is official. Having downloaded Twitter for the iPad and signed in using your Twitter account login, the differences between this and the popular iPhone version are instantly apparent. Utilizing the larger display you now have two columns not the previous single page iPhone users would expect. The left side offering direct access to the various options available, Timeline, Mentions, Lists, Messages, Profile, and Search. Having selected your choice of option it instantly opens in the larger right column. Selecting Timeline will bring up your Tweets and all those of the users you are following, a quick downward swipe will allow you to scroll through these listings. Find a Tweet that takes your eye, tap it to open the Twitter account for that user in a new window referred to as “panes” which also displays their latest Tweet whit the message specific related information be it Timeline, profile details or web-link displayed below. A swipe to the left will close this new window when held in portrait mode, in landscape mode alas this pane will be partially shown on the right of the screen. Which brings us to one of the few flaws, when viewed in landscape the screen can get a little messy, with three panes open at one time with no way to close a specific pane without selecting a new option from the main left hand column.
Composing a tweet or a re-tweet is a breeze in both views, simply tap the new Tweet icon on the lower left of the screen to bring up the keyboard and a blank Tweet pane to fill with your 140 characters of wisdom/reply. The original timeline or tweet also remains on screen to help you keep focus and on topic, 140 letters isn’t a lot after-all! From this pane you can also upload photos (New or existing images from your library), geotag your posts which links the post to your current location or tweet directly to one or more of your followers or those you are following. Each being a fantastic edition and ones that blur the line between app and the web version.
Users will multiple accounts can switch between them with ease, although this does require a separate sign in/out access again taking inspiration from its online counterpart. Another huge plus point, although it could be argued that the additions of “panes” and the gesture drive control, Twitter on the iPad is very similar to the iPhone version. Yet without question the ability to use Twitter to it’s full potential is now taken out of the home as unlike the smartphone version, any web-based content text, image or video that is uploaded or linked from user accounts, is now gloriously displayed via the larger iPad screen. Making viewing videos, images or visiting website easy, all achieved from within the app and without the need to open a third party applications and slow down the process.
Twitter For iPad. The official Twitter for iPad was an application that seemingly took and age to be released but the wait was certainly worth it. Although there is little here in the way of revolution – this is Twitter after all – the functionality, design and user-friendly control and overall ease of use combine to bring the complete Twitter package to a portable device and out of the home.
