We all love the experience of playing games on our iPads, sometimes we love it a bit too much. If you are a serious gamer, chances are you might even have a Wii lying around for those times when you feel like gaming it up on a larger screen. Or maybe you’re like me, and you’ve got a stray wiimote left over from some hacking project gone-awry. Whatever the case may be, if you own a jailbroken iPad and a wiimote you need to pair them up for a supergeek-level gaming experience! There are several ways to use your Wiimote and your iPad together, some are more fun than others. Here are two apps that’ll get your WiiPad career started.
First things first, let’s make sure everything is functioning correctly and that we can get a good Bluetooth pair between our two devices. Head over to Cydia and install the “Wiimote OpenGL-ES Demo” from the BigBoss repository. Once installed launch that app from your springboard and you’ll be greeted by a BTstack pairing menu.
Hold down buttons 1 and 2 on your wiimote until the two devices are paired (blue lights will stop flashing, and the first one will stay solid). Once you’ve achieved a successful pair you’ll see a virtual wiimote displayed on your iPad’s screen. It will move on one axis, in real-time synchronization with the actual Wiimote.
Now that we’ve confirmed we’re free of technical issues let’s get to playing some games! Even in spite of all the beautiful 3D and vector graphics that the app store now holds, we can’t help but reminisce about the good ‘ole days of super nintendo. What better way to use the Wiimote’s physical buttons is there than some classic MegaMan X? To run nintendo ROMs we’ll need an emulator called “SNES A.D. Plus” from BigBoss. Upon launch we’ll see an empty menu of games.
To download some games you’ll need to tap on “Find Games”. This will bring up a few databases, full of ROMs that are available to download and install. Simply browse around and download a few titles that you’d like to try your hand at. Now go to “Settings” and turn on the Wiimote toggle. Wait for your devices to pair, and then tap the confirmation button.
You are now ready to take your mind back to 1990, and fry a few more braincells in constant pursuit of the next level!
